Incident Investigation…Trend Analysis…Behavior Based Safety… Safety Program Development and Implementation…  Employee Training… Risk Assessment…OSHA Regulatory Compliance…Business Health/Safety Strategy…Accident Prevention…Safe Work Practices.

CAREER HISTORY

WEYERHAEUSER COMPANY – Newton, NC 1/15/2007 to 8/04/2008
Vertically integrated global forest products company.  Business consists of managing and harvesting company owned timberlands to produce paper rollstock in company owned mills. The rollstock is transported to corrugated box plants and converted into corrugated packaging.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER COMPANY – Newton, NC …………………………………………………8/04/2008 to Present
International Paper is the world's largest forest products company producing uncoated paper, corrugated packaging and pulp.  International Paper also distributes printing, packaging, and graphic-art supplies.

* International Paper acquired Weyerhaeuser Company as part of a company merger on 04 August 2008.

Safety Coordinator - 2007 to present

Provide all aspects of safety, environmental and health training to the management team and employees. Responsibilities include developing, implementing and maintaining Health and Safety Programs to maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.  Submit monthly reports to the leadership team summarizing safety statistics. Research and formulate new programs to reduce workplace hazards and interact with local, state and federal regulatory agencies to ensure strict adherence to permitted operations. Investigation Team Leader for all safety incidents and injuries, track safety trends and formulate action plans to improve safety performance. Leader of the safety committee and role model for safe work practices.  An added responsibility, currently being transitioned to the Safety Coordinator position, is the day to day administration and execution of the Environmental Management System. The EMS is designed to maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.

 Business Challenges & Results:

• In 2007 Weyerhaeuser identified the Newton facility as a “focus” plant due to the 4.44 Recordable Incident Rate (RIR) in 2006.  As a result of the increased safety training program implemented by the Safety Team and a strict safety audit follow-up plan, safety performance in 2007  improved to a RIR of  0 .64.  The safety training and audit programs continued into 2008 and the Newton plant is tracking to achieve a zero (0) RIR for 2008.

Turnaround success included attention to ‘near miss incidents’ and a proactive approach to safety issues. Another significant factor in achieving these results is the change in the safety culture.  Positive employee involvement on safety teams and the safety committee helped foster employee ownership and ’buy in.’  By training employees to not only focus on personal safety, but the safety of those around them, the ‘courage to care’ program trained team members to watch out for each other and reduce accidents.

•  June of 2008, confronted with the challenge of overseeing the safety responsibilities of a $1,086,850.00 roof project. To combat potential safety issues, all contractors attended an in depth training class before starting the roof work.  Was able to communicate through a language barrier due to the diverse contractor workforce.  Strict enforcement of the safety rules and regulations resulted in one contractor being let go from the job site due to non-compliance.  Conducting safety contractor audits aided in zero contractor injuries during the roof project.

• Team member for regional Health and Safety Exchange audits for company owned plants located in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.  As part of the audit team, I presented positive and negative feedback to the plant management team for environmental, health and safety issues discovered during the audit.

• Responsible for developing the annual safety plan.  The process included an evaluation of documented safety incidents, a review of historical injury trends and an examination of maintenance work orders as they pertain to safety. The process also included procedure reviews, inspection reviews, researching business alerts, business priorities and soliciting employee feedback.  Successfully executed the 2008 safety plan which contributed to the Newton plant achieving all 2008 safety goals, including an RIR of ‘less than one.’

• Developed and implemented safety and health initiatives consisting of Behavioral Based Safety Programs (BBS), Job Safety Analysis (JSA) Program, Working at Heights Program, Ergonomics Program, and the Lock Out, Tag Out & Try Program.

The Behavioral Based Safety Programs consisted of the RADAR and the STOP program.  The focus of the RADAR program is upset conditions, and the focus of the STOP program is workplace conditions and employee behaviors both from a ‘safe’ and an ‘unsafe’ perspective.

• Planned a Wellness Fair for the Newton plant to include blood pressure screening, body fat percentage evaluations, cholesterol testing and blood sugar testing.  All testing and services provided free of charge to the employees. The intent of the wellness fair was to make participants aware of any medical issues previously undetected.
